What Is It About Hummingbirds?

For some reason, there have been some great songs written about, for or just plain involving, hummingbirds. We could go on about different artists viewing the same subject matter from differing viewpoints, or about an indie-rock predilection to such images, but I’ve been out all weekend. I’m tired. The fact of the matter is, people write cool songs with this title. They’re all about movement, a sometimes-frantic confusion, and the natural human state of missing what’s gone–maybe even before it’s totally left. Here’s a few Hummingbird songs.

This is a DVD showing a group of tired road dogs with back problems rocking out every night–maybe ’cause they don’t got nothin’ else to do. This show goes over that line from a really great musical performance movie to a great piece of art in its own right. Like The Last Waltz, really.
